Grandma-isms

So my grandma called today to say she'd missed her normally scheduled hair cut.  But that she was sent a coupon in the mail.  If she came in now she could get a hair cut and a free blow job...

I told her I'm sure someone would switch coupons with her. LOL

Guess what?

Grandma today told me that I'm the best driver in the whole world!  Wow, I never thought I'd hear those words come out of her mouth.

Friends Don't Let Friends Eat Captain D's

My friend Marci and I love Long John Silver's for their hush puppies.  She lives out of town and I don't see her often.  My husband is a vegan and I rarely get fish for dinner. So when she's in town, it's a hush puppy and fish fest!  (Though now that they have one where she lives, she's not as excited about the fish.)

So as you know, I've been striving to take my grandmother out for lunch at least once a week. She actually prefers Captain D's to LJS.  While I find their hushpuppies really annoying. I mean seriously, who needs all that onion to ruin a great hushpuppy?  So I try to distract her from Captain D's.

She also loves to go to Red Lobster.  She always looks at me and says, "Order me what they have on TV..."  I try to explain, "But grandma, we don't watch the same shows...But grandma, I have Tivo... But grandma, I don't know nothin' about no seafood!"  Still I try to order.  I've gotten it wrong, thankfully she likes the food.  Last week she actually listened to me and caught the name of what she wants - the 30 shrimp special.  So there it came a huge platter of shrimp for this little woman.  She ate every single one.  And a baked potato. And not one but TWO cheddar biscuits, but only half her salad.

Can you feel the shrimp a quakin'?  We're getting ready to go out.  She promises me it will not be to Red Lobster, she's no longer hungry for shrimp. (Imagine that!)  So I wonder where we're going to go.  I was telling Marci about the trips out with grandma.  She told me I was a good granddaughter.  My response?

"Not because I take her out but because I take her to Captain D's despite knowing it's CRAP!"

Ah the things we do for those we love...

100,000+ miles

Well, our trusty minivan finally hit 100,000 miles.  It happened just in front of the old farm off Taylorsville Road where Kevin and I would buy peanut butter fudge in the early days of our relationship.

I spent the day with my grandma.  She and I did errands for her, like haircuts, groceries, bills and medications.  We also had a nice lunch.  Then she and I visited my mom (her daughter) and brought her lunch.  There I did mail run and trash duty.  I enjoyed my time with them, though it did take up my whole day, which was a bit drastic for me.  I'll live.

Curling Iron

Yes, it is true. My fingers (and hair) touched a curling iron tonight.  Kevin and I are headed towards an extended family gathering in honor of the marriage of the son of Kevin's first cousin - a black tie optional affair.  Apparently Kevin and I have a different meaning of optional. *sigh*  So not only did I curl my hair and put on make up - I'm wearing full blown panty hose!  Wish me luck.

NOTE TO MY CHILDREN:  Please don't have anything black tie or black tie optional for your weddings.  If you do I'll assume it means you're looking for a polite way to uninvite me...

Nathan

Fifteen years ago, I got the horrible phone call that my 4 month old nephew, Nathan, had died of SIDS.  He was 5 weeks older than Hilary. To read his story: SIDS: A Personal Story

Nathan_1

I love this picture of Nathan.  It was taken when we was just a few weeks old.  The hands belong to his mother and grandmother.  I actually remember holding Nathan, curled up, next to my belly and knowing that I would have a very small baby.  Nathan was about 6 lbs at the time and I knew there was no way he would fit in my uterus - to my surprise Hilary weighed 7 lbs. 14 oz. at birth.

She and Nathan spent a lot of time together.  I still remember New Year's Eve the best.  It was the first for both of them and Nathan spent the night with us.  They laid on a blanket together and I sat watching TV remarking, "Wow, Hilary and Nathan's rockin' New Year's Eve!  Go wild babies!"  It is a really great memory.

Take today and tell someone what they can do to help reduce the risk of SIDS, including the oft neglected breastfeeding and healthy pregnancy portions.

The Best Valentine Ever

So I was talking to my grandmother today.  I always try to remember her on Valentine's Day since my grandfather died in early January 2001.  So she was telling me what she watched on television - something about what people want for Valentine's Day.  So we talk about that for awhile, then she talks about what Kevin and I do for Valentine's Day.

I told her I was trying to surprise him and take him lunch today from his favorite vegan place.  She said that was nice and asked what I was expecting. I told her that Kevin and I had finally had a talk about holidays like Valentine's Day and what I was missing and what I wanted. I explained that he hated feeling like he was being forced to buy "crap" and that I felt like he didn't care.  But this year we were in sync and it would be great. I told her I gave Kevin a list of stuff I wanted:

  • light bulbs on porch changed
  • light bulb in shower changed
  • homemade chocolate raspberry souffle (since we can't go to the non-veggie place anymore)

She liked that idea.  I was happy.  He was happy.  She then told me that I took after my grandfather when it came to Valentine's Day.  She told me that he was always the romantic.  She said that after watching the news crew at a local store talking to man after man who had waited until the last minute to purchase a card for their Valentine, she was surprised, because she never had to worry.

It was then that she shared the story of Valentine's Day 2001.  She said that grandpa had been dead for about a month.  But she was flipping her calendar as she did every morning and inside the calendar for the date: February 14, 2001 was a sealed card for her.  She told me how she smiled, laughed and cried.  That her husband who couldn't remember lots of things or plan a meal ahead of time always managed to plan ahead for the big holidays that he loved, including Valentine's Day. And because of that, what would have been her first Valentine's Day alone in 63 years was not alone, for she had the card he had already prepared for her before his unexpected death.

I can only hope that I'm good enough to catch up to my dear old grandpa.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Shopping with Grandma

Natura_249x203 Well, the big day finally arrived!  The day we could go buy grandma a prostethic breast. It was all very tasteful and the woman was very nice. She said that everyone who worked there had a prosthesis too. Grandma was so thrilled when she tried on the prosthesis, she beamed!  I was so happy, I was fearful it wouldn't work for her, but it really did lift her spirits.

So afterwards, we go out to lunch and grandma keeps touching her new breast.  I asked her, "Did you know you're constantly touching your breast in public?"  To which she replied, "No I am not!"
